Hibiscus, hailing from its home in Africa, has a long history of use not only for its deep red flowers (botanically speaking, we use the red calyx), but also as a delicious vegetable in stir fries, soups, and spicy chutneys. The edible seeds have a flavor similar to peanuts, have an oil content up to 20% and can be roasted for use as a coffee substitute.

There is a growing body of evidence touting this spice as a potential antagonist to a wide array of cancers. There is also a long history of its use in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, as well as its beneficial effects on digestion. It may also aid in decreasing some forms of age-related cognitive degeneration due to a compound found in the rhizome called 1-acetoxy chavicol acetate (ACA).

Included in the group of pulses referred to as dal in Indian cuisine, pigeon pea can vary in color from cream, grey, purple, black, or spotted.
Adding to the list of this crops wondrous attributes, pigeon pea serves as a fantastic soil stabilizer thanks to its extensive root system. Since pigeon pea has the ability to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere we also employ it as a companion crop, pruning the young leaves and shoots multiple times per year as a green manure; what an amazing plant!
Suggested uses – Worthy of being a pantry staple, this pulse can be used as a part of a bean burger base, a hearty and nutritious soup, or try making the famous Carribean Rice and Beans with coconut milk, yum!

Aromatic Green Cardamom.
Elettaria cardamomum
Green cardamom, also known as lesser or true cardamom, is one of the oldest spices, having been used for thousands of years in India and Egypt. It is still highly sought after for its culinary attributes and powerful medicinal uses.
The seeds, and the unique, volatile essential oils obtained from them, are reported to have a stimulating, tonic effect, especially on the lungs – as an expectorant – and kidneys. The seed is taken internally in the treatment of indigestion, nausea, vomiting, enuresis and pulmonary diseases accompanied by phlegm. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat bronchial and digestive complaints. These aromatic compounds are reported to be antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, carminative and stimulating.
This ancient spice is warm, aromatic, camphoraceous, sweet and spicy.
Suggested uses – Try a bit of cracked cardamom in your cooking water before adding rice. We love grinding a pod or two to add to a brew of coffee, or add it to your favorite chai blend. Consider a touch of cardamom in your baked goods to take your recipes up a notch!

Packed with anthocyanins and other nutracueticals, benefits from consuming hibiscus have been scientifically reviewed and been found to reduce blood pressure significantly, have strong antioxidant and anticancer activity, positive renal effects including reduction of uric acids, and some anti-cholesterol activity.
Our hibiscus flowers are planted, cared for, and harvested by hand. We then dry them in the sun before carefully packaging.
Suggested uses – The perfect foundation for a cold tea, sweetened and paired with lemon grass and seltzer. We also are fans of warm tea with ginger. Their high pectin content lends themselves well to jelly making. Liven up you next cocktail by infusing some neutral spirits with hibiscus, then floating a few drops in your favorite libation!
